Display Stream Compression (DSC),Breaking through bandwidth limitations

StellaParom

1.M24 series, support DSC compression technology, break through bandwidth limitations, taking into account the high resolution/high refresh rate

In 2024, TESmart launched a series of 8K KVM with full support for HDMI 2.1 and DP 1.4, which has been tested to support up to 240HZ refresh rate in 4K resolution. You should know that although HDMI 2.1 supports 48Gbit/s.

Now, although HDMI 2.1 supports 48Gbit/s bandwidth, But 4K@240Hz requires a bandwidth of 54.84 Gbit/s. This requires the use of Display Stream Compression (DSC) technology, through the DSC technology, 48Gbit/s bandwidth is sufficient to transmit 4K@240HZ video signal.

2. What is DSC technology?

DSC compression technology, known as DisplayStreamCompression image compression transmission, through the algorithm of lossless compression of image data, compression ratio of 3:1, in order to more efficient and faster transmission. DSC has now become a common feature of most monitors, and widely used in DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.1 and other video transmission standards. With DSC, these interfaces become even more powerful. They can transmit, for example, images at 4K@240hz or even up to 8K@60hz.

3. Hardware requirements for DSC

The implementation of DSC technology first requires that both the graphics card and the monitor support the DSC function. 20-series N cards and higher can support DSC, AMD 5700 and higher can support DSC, and for core graphics, starting from the 11th generation of smart Intel® Core processor graphics cards (also known as Tiger Lake) to higher versions, DSC can be supported. for monitors, you can check whether DSC is supported from the monitor's specifications to see if it supports DSC. Usually if the monitor uses DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.1 ports, it can basically support DSC technology.

4. Choose your 8K KVM switch.

If you have purchased a high end graphics card and gaming monitor and want to share all your peripherals with other devices via a KVM switch, the KVM you choose must also support DSC functionality in order to do so. If the KVM doesn't support DSC, it won't be able to deliver high resolution and high refresh rate video either. Similarly, the cables used throughout the configuration as well as the conversion devices need to be composite DP1.4 and HDMI 2.1 specifications.

TESmart has launched a variety of 8K KVMs with different port combinations in 2024, all of which support DSC technology, as well as key technologies such as HDR10+,G-Sync/F-Sync, VRR, etc. Tested and tested, it can easily output high-quality video signals up to 4K@240HZ with DSC enabled.

If you favor using DP port to connect your monitor, you can choose DKS202-M24 or DKS203-M24; if you favor using HDMI cable to connect your monitor, you can choose HDK202-M24,HDK203-M24,HDK402-M24 according to the actual situation of your device.

In addition to the key high resolution and high refresh rate support, the M24 series products also provide 1000M network connection, multiple switching methods to help the ultimate gaming experience.
